COME HOME to CAMERON: MERCY for the Merciful
FOCAL PASSAGE: Matthew 5:7… Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
THE MEANING OF MERCY
The term “forgiveness” is almost interchangeable with the term “mercy.” But there is a slight difference, mercy is the source of forgiveness, and forgiveness is the expression of mercy.
We sometimes think of MERCY in terms of sympathy, kindness, or compassion.
Mercy is more than feeling compassion for someone in need. Mercy only exists when we do something to help.
1. EXTENDED FROM GOD TO MAN
We are shown mercy at the hands of God – Ephesians 2:4… But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy. . .
2. EXTENDED FROM MAN TO MAN
We are given plenty of opportunities to extend MERCY to those around us.
MODELS OF MERCY
As we examine the biblical models of Mercy what we note is how MERCY works itself out – somebody hurts us unjustly and we must respond to this hurt.
Mercy does not come into play until we have the power to hurt them back and then we have choice. Will love enter and will we extend MERCY?
> Abraham was merciful to Lot – Genesis 14
> Joseph was merciful to his Brothers – Genesis 50
> David was merciful to Saul – I Samuel 24, 26
> Moses was merciful to Miriam – Numbers 12:13
> JESUS WAS THE MOST MERCIFUL OF ALL
LIVE IT OUT
The more MERCY we have received, the more likely we are to extend it to others.
> Have you ever been the recipient of God’s MERCY?
> How are you in need of God’s MERCY (FORGIVENESS) today?
> How do you need to demonstrate God’s MERCY to someone in your life?
