MARGINAL or MAXIMUM CHRISTIANITY Spirit of Generosity:Contentment
FOCAL PASSAGE: Luke 12:15-21
CONTENTMENT THAT ENTHRONES GOD RATHER THAN WEALTH
1. WEALTH WAS HIS GOD BECAUSE IT TOOK FIRST PLACE IN HIS LIFE.
2. WEALTH WAS ALSO HIS GOD BECAUSE HE LOOKED TO IT FOR SECRUITY.
3. WEALTH WAS HIS GOD BECAUSE HE WORSHIPED IT.
CONTENTMENT ENCOURAGES GENEROSITY WITH KINGDOM GOALS
1. DISCOVER THE CENTRAL PURPOSE OF LIFE.
2. BEWARE OF THE STEALTHY TEMPTATION TO WITHHOLD.
II Corinthians 9:8 (HCSB)
Note 2 things about this verse:
> THE FIRST THING: When you live faithfully in God’s will, you will have everything you need.
> THE SECOND THING: God’s blessings routinely imply our obligation to bless others.
They weren’t supposed to spend everything they had on themselves. Neither are we.
LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE RICH FOOL
> BE GENEROUS WITH PEOPLE. God puts people in our path who are there for us to touch with His love, bless with His provision and reach with His grace.
> BE GENEROUS WITH GOD. God puts the commission of Christ in our hands so we can minister to others with our gifts and lead them to salvation through the gospel.
You make a living by what you get; you make a life by what you give!
LIVE IT OUT
Ask yourself these questions:
> Is my most important goal in life to make good money?
> Do I use what God has given me to manage to bless others as well as myself?
