KNOW CHRIST PERSONALLY: The Pathway of Salvation II

Preacher:
Passage: I John 5:12-13

KNOW > GROW > GO
Focal Passages: I John 5:12-1312 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

HOW CAN WE KNOW FOR SURE WE ARE SAVED?

  1. The ASSURANCE of SALVATION
Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
  2. WORKS SALVATION

THE MEANING OF WORD SALVATION
The word “salvation” has various meanings in Scripture.

  1. RESCUE or HEALING
Matthew 8:2525 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
Acts 27:20 20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved.
Matthew 9:22 (CSB)22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Have courage, daughter,” he said. “Your faith has saved you.” And the woman was made well from that moment.

  1. SPIRITUAL SALVATION
Matthew 19:2525 When the disciples heard this, they were utterly astonished and asked, “Then who can be saved?
John 10:9 … 9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.
II Corinthians 5:19 … 19 That is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and he has committed the message of reconciliation to us.
Hebrews 9:11-1211 But Christ has appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come. In the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands (that is, not of this creation), 12 he entered the most holy place once for all time, not by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.
John 3:1616 For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

THE EXPERIENCE OF SALVATION

  1. GOD’S PLAN
•God has but one plan of salvation for “all” people.
Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
•Not through our performance (law) or heritage (Jew) or even affiliation (church).

  1. MISTAKEN PLAN
•Some would have us believe that, during the Old Testament times, men were saved by keeping the law.
Paul corrected that false conception: Galatians 2:1616 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.
Example of Abraham: Galatians 3:66 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
Example of Moses: Hebrews 11:24-2624 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.
•These Old Testament folks were saved through faith in Christ who was to come, even as we are saved through faith in Christ who has come.

3. FOUR IMPORTANT PHASES in the EXPERIENCE of SALVATION
There are four important phases in the experience of salvation.

A. CONVERSION
•There are two sides to salvation: The divine side and the human side; God’s side and man’s side.
I John 3:7-107 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

Two important elements in conversion:

a. REPENTANCE
Luke 18:1313 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
II Corinthians 7:1010 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
I John 3:7-10
Luke 13:33 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
Luke 19:88 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

b. FAITH
Acts 16:3131 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”
John 1:12 2 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
Romans 4:55 However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.
