Week 2: Doing LIFE Together
“You have made known to me the paths of life” - Acts 2:28a
“How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?”- Acts 8:31
1. L – Learning – Discovering and applying the timeless truths of God’s Word
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. - II Timothy 2:15
2. I – Involved – Using my abilities to serve God by serving others
If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. - I Peter 4:11b
3. F – Friendship – developing deep relational connections with other believers and non-believers
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. - John 15:13
4. E – Engage – Helping everyone I meet take their next step toward Christ.
Proclaim the message; persist in it whether convenient or not; rebuke, correct, and encourage with great patience and teaching.- II Timothy 4:2(HCSB)
Question: When you hear the word “Learning” what comes to mind?
I. The Point of Learning – (The aim)
Two Kinds of Learning
A. Head (Intellectual) Learning
You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.- James 2:19
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.- James 1:22-24
B. Heart (Genuine) Learning
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.- John 14:26
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. - Psalm 119:11
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he - Prov 23:7 (KJV)
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. - Proverbs 4:23
II. The Process of Learning – (The How)
Discovering and applying the timeless truths of God’s Word.
Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. 31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. - Acts 8:30-31
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. -James 1:22
III. Product of Learning – (The Result/Why)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. - John 1:1, 14
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”- Luke 10:1-10
