Week 3: Doing LIFE Together
‘I’ is for Involve
”If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. - I Peter 4:11b
For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. - Romans 12:4-8
I. The Definition of Ministry
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” - Mark 10:45; cf. also Matthew 20:28
II. The Direction of Ministry
1. First, we minister to the Lord.
“Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” - Acts 13:1-2
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” - Colossians 3:17
2. Second, we minister to believers.
“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” - Hebrews 6:10
3. And third, we minister to unbelievers.
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” - Matthew 5:13
III. The Areas of Ministry
1. First, we minister to people’s physical needs.
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” - Matthew 25:31-40
2. Second, we minister to people’s emotional needs.
“And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” - I Thessalonians 5:14
3. Third, we minister to people’s intellectual needs.
“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,” - I Peter 3:15
4. And fourth, we minister to people’s spiritual needs.
“All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:” - II Corinthians 5:18
How Can I Become Involved In Ministry?
Live It Out
Can you say today, if your life were to end, you have no regrets? That you have been INVOLVE in ministry to its fullest?
Are you a part of the sleeping giant at Cameron Baptist? What will you do today to wake up that giant?
Being INVOLVED begins with our relationship with Jesus. What does yours look like?
